Explore the wonder of nature in the middle of urban Los Angeles!

Our expert docents will lead you through the Ballona Freshwater Marsh, where you’ll learn about its history and ecology. Enjoy all the unique native plants while getting a special behind-the-scenes look at this protected place, and meet some of the birds who call the marsh home.

RSVPs: No RSVP is necessary for individuals and small groups. Large groups of 8 or more, please register by emailing volunteer@ballonafriends.org or calling our office at 310-306-5994 with your name and group size.

Ages: All ages, but keep in mind the wood chip trail is uneven terrain.

What to wear: Close-toed shoes are required! We recommend dressing in weather-appropriate layers, along with a hat. Long pants are also recommended to protect against occasional prickly plants.

What to bring: Bring a full water bottle to stay hydrated. There are no water fountains on site.

Location: Please park on the southwest side of Jefferson' Blvd before you reach Lincoln Blvd. We meet at the purple welcome sign with the Great Blue Heron on it.

Arrive on time: The marsh gates are closed once the tour begins and late arrivals will find themselves locked out.

Cancellations: For safety, we must cancel if it’s raining. Please check the weather before arriving. If you’re not sure, please call us or check our social media for cancellation announcements.

Donations: The suggested donation is $5 per person. By donating online or at our events, you can help protect and restore the Ballona Wetlands. Free tours and events are made possible by the efforts and donations of kindhearted people just like you.

We hope you enjoy your visit to the Ballona Freshwater Marsh!
