Ballona Wetlands
Subtidal Habitats

Constantly covered with salt or fresh water, this habitat is devoid of higher plants, except for eelgrass (Zostera), which is not present at Ballona.  However, it does support a variety of filamentous and planktonic algae.

Subtidal areas are home to many species of benthic and burrowing invertebrates, important organisms in the detritus food web.

Another major component of this habitat is the community of estuary and oceanic fish.

Other plant communities in the Ballona Wetlands:
Intertidal Mudflats
Coastal Salt Marsh
Coastal Strand
Coastal Sage Scrub
Riparian and Freshwater Marsh
