"Ballona
Wetlands: The Story of an Urban Oasis"
dramatically illustrates how over the past century the coast
marshes of the Los Angeles basin, once a flourishing nursery for
wildlife and sealife, were reduced to a barely functioning
"biological junkyard," as one biologist described it.
The story of
Ballona's deterioration is typical of the tragedy of America's
wetlands, over 90% of which have been destroyed by
mankind. But the story of Ballona's preservation is
extraordinary. Friends of Ballona Wetlands, the
organization formed to preserve and restore Ballona, launched a
vigorous, all-volunteer program that, through the courts and the
political system, saved the wetlands from destruction.
