CDFW Extends the Public Comment Period on Ballona RestorationMarch 5th, 2013
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife recently announced that it has extended until March 15 the public comment period for its revised Notice of Preparation (NOP) concerning the restoration of the Ballona Ecological Reserve. The NOP refers to the Environmental Impact Report that the Department must file under provisions contained in the California Environmental Quality Act. We find the announcement significant because the revised NOP reflects plans for the recently announced Annenberg Foundation interpretive center (read our comments on the NOP here (pdf) and our preliminary comments on the Annenberg interpretive center here).
We feel that the public must be involved closely in matters as consequential as restoration of the Ballona Wetlands, and we are pleased that the Department of Fish and Wildlife has extended the period for public comment on the NOP. Dr. David Kay, President of our Board of Directors, notes that “we’ve worked for decades to get the restoration project to move forward. Waiting a little longer to ensure that the California Environmental Quality Act process is administered in a thorough and legally defensible manner represents good management.”
We urge you to make comments on the NOP if you have them; you can find links explaining how to comment here.
