The L.A. Times’ Sensible Editorial

Yesterday the L.A. Times published a sensible editorial regarding developments in the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve, reminding us that we remain in the preliminary planning stages for the ultimate shape of the Reserve and that all interested parties will have ample opportunity to participate in the process (and indeed we have already begun with our comment letter on the Notice of Preparation).

The Times was correct to note the seriousness of the environmental insults incurred by the Wetlands, and we know, based on detailed surveys and the professional judgments of many of our members, that the Wetlands have been severely degraded. We’ve noted with pleasure how quickly native wildlife and plant life have returned to restored portions of the freshwater marsh and dunes, and we’re eager for substantial and widespread restoration efforts to proceed in the salt marsh.

Our mission revolves around conserving and increasing community involvement in the Wetlands, and it’s extremely gratifying to see how far we have come since our founder Ruth Lansford began leading tours of it 35 years ago. We look forward to the day in the not-too-distant future when the ecological vitality of the entire Wetlands will be restored and the community can enjoy the natural wonders of functional salt and freshwater marshes. In the meantime we’ll continue to guide adults and children through the Wetlands, educate the community about the ecological role played by marshes and their inhabitants, organize clean-up efforts, contribute technical expertise to restoration and research efforts, and keep you informed of our progress.
