The Straw Brigade: A New Roads School Student Project

By Nanako Van Dyck, Frances Erlandson, & Lexis Hankins

New Roads Middle School Students

Our assignment was to complete 4 hours of volunteer work for an organization supporting a revolution. We, three seventh graders from New Roads Middle School of Santa Monica, chose to volunteer for Friends of Ballona Wetlands to help prevent pollution in Los Angeles. We did two creek cleanups on the 29th of March and the 7th of April, picking up trash along the creek.

It became a game for us to count the straws we found by the creek, along with Frances’ father, Todd Erlandson. Once we had finished the necessary volunteer work of four hours, we had collected and properly disposed of an estimated amount of 600 straws. The two clean ups we did inspired us to throw away all littered straws we find everywhere we go.
