Birds of Ballona

The following includes a checklist to use in recording any of the 215 species of birds that you may see while visting the Ballona Wetlands.

The birds are listed according to the American Ornithologists' Union classification system, in which birds are grouped by orders, followed by families, genus and species.  Scientific names are not given, but can be found in most field guides, which you may want to use in conjunction with this list.

The birds profiles show the general form of the families.  There are several silhouettes shown when there is wide variety between family groups.

Several types of bird habitats exist at Ballona, including salt and fresh water marsh areas, coastal dune, coastal scrub and riparian ecosystem.
